Jim VandeHei, Founder of Axios has some ideas for how to combat "fake news"
Updated: Oct 22, 2018
We read Axios often and Mr. VandeHei just posted a few reasonable guidelines for media people in today's social media age. One that makes particular sense sense to us is limiting reporters on Twitter. Obviously in the USA one can tweet whatever one wants (until Twitter decides you can't anyway), but having New York Times and CNN "reporters" editorializing on Twitter isn't a good idea for a news organization.
For news and opinion sites that's a different matter.
News organizations should ban their reporters from doing anything on social media — especially Twitter — beyond sharing stories. Snark, jokes and blatant opinion are showing your hand, and it always seems to be the left one. This makes it impossible to win back the skeptics.
But Mr. VandeHei you must also understand that the people who are critical of the "old media" aren't just skeptical. The tweets from left-leaning reporters just confirmed what they'd long known.
